Frank is one of the world-leading scholars on socio-technical transitions, and has been selected in the 2014, 2019, and 2020 Highly Cited Researcher list. His research addresses relationships between social, economic, and technical developments in large-scale systemic change. His research specialities include low-carbon transitions, the emergence of new technologies, the co-evolution of technology and society, industrial change and corporate strategy. His work combines insights from innovation studies, evolutionary economics, institutional theory, and political science. Frank has also consulted and written invited reports for the European Environment Agency, OECD, European Commission, and is a lead author of the forthcoming sixth IPCC assessment report.
